Many artists have been obsessed with self-representation. During the early Renaissance artists inserted self-portraits into religious works commissioned by wealthy and powerful patrons often in crowd scenes. Women artists of the Renaissance period also painted self-portraits but within the restrictions of propriety required for women of the time. They include Sofinisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana and Elizabetta Sirani. The great baroque painter Artemisia Ghentileschi painted her self-portrait as the allegory of painting, a depiction possible only to a woman as the allegory of painting was a feminine convention. Other obsessive self-portraitists include Rembrandt and, in the twentieth century, Max Beckman. |
